why is fast food so prevalent in America?

I can get it if you're a trucker or something and live on the road, but if you have a normal life then you have LITERALLY no reason to not make your own food.

Right? The only times we had it as kids was for birthdays or on a road trip. As an adult, road trips and maybe at an airport. But now I notice most people going through McD drive thru are alone in their car, middle aged or older, and more female than male. And they mostly just park and eat it in the parking lot.
My theory is they want to eat it alone because it's a "hidden shame" thing. Like they don't want their partner or family to see them doing it.
