It's an old double brick house with internal brick. The gyprock ceiling isn't nicely attached to the wall and there is a massive air gap. I was thinking caulk but maybe also mortar, but was concerned in might not expand and contract. Is there a general term for things like this so I can look up other suggestions?

This old British geezer is a legend and his channel is a YouTube hidden gem. In the 80s he co-hosted The Secret Life of Machines, a series explaining the history and workings of household appliances. Now he builds quirky interactive arcade machines, and has made a spiritual sequel series called The Secret Life of Components explaining how he does it. This guy has a lifetime's worth of experience and is a great educator/entertainer. Essential /diy/ material right here.

When I worked in sign shops and had access to vinyl plotters and a full screen printing shop we would constantly goof around making official looking signs and other items either from scratch or using art and print setups from client jobs to make altered versions like

> we made the A, B, C restaurant rating signs for the local health depth and would always print extras with no letter and then make gag F rating signs to pass around to friends...we also made "I _______" bumper stickers and did the same by leaving the symbol off some extras so we could make "I (club symbol) my kids" and " I (spade symbol) my cat", etc. versions.

>we made real looking ID packages for fake bands and products, businesses and government agencies or operations or conventions, etc. that didn't exist, just to mess with people and see how gullible they were.

> ever seen a logo or other ad art that looked like something they probably didn't intend, like an asshole or vagina or other intimate body part but it's the wrong color so nobody makes the connection? We'd print that stuff with the *perfect* colors to make the connection, just because we could. Same with business names that just needed one or two letters to change into something vulgar and/or humorous. PRO TIP: don't ever the clients see them.

> we had a friend who got his law degree and for his first bottom rung shit job he got hired by the worst TV ad famous ambulance chaser firm around locally, that was the butt of every shitty lawyer joke. My job had done some printing for them and we had a silkscreen of their logo, so as a gag graduation gift we got a very used and grease stained khaki mechanic's uniform work shirt and printed their logo across the back and found the oval embroidered name patch for over the pocket so he had appropriate attire for his grunt work at the settlement mill.

we got this stuff for christmas one year:
https://youtu.be/vf1GkWvWelI?t=12

he took some to work. he wanted to prank a guy he knew who was always playing jokes on people.

one day the guy gets coffee in a styrofoam cup and sets it on his desk (not my dads desk). he leaves to get something. my dad sneaks over with another cup he cut the bottom out of. he takes the guys coffee, replaces it with the new cup and dumps the slime in it. covers it with paper.

freaked the guy out a little when he removes the paper sees the green stuff. picks it up and it falls out onto his desk.

I don't know if there's a better board for this, but I'm looking into a projector for an outdoor setup. I'm between two models, one with a short throw distance (about 8ft for the screen size we have) and another that's 20ft for the screen size. The screen is going in a large field so space isn't a problem.

My question is, is it better to just get the projector with the shorter throw or does the distance not matter? I keep reading enthusist forums where one person claims to lumen strength is the same at the correct throw distance, but I'm skeptical. Any advice would be appreciated.

I own a projector and honestly the surface you're projecting on will matter more than the lumen rating. With that said, the 20ft one gives your more options. You'd be amazed how little 8 feet of distance can be when you're on this large field looking at how to mount your projector. So yeah, go for the 20 foot one. If you were doing this inside it would be a different story.

Thanks, I'm looking at either this Optoma GT2100HDR ($1400) or ViewSonic LS740HD ($800) that has the longer throw. The lumen difference is like 200, contrast ratio is the same. I figure if I can save the extra $600 then do it, I just didn't want to buy this thing and have a shitty image for movie night. It seems like the cost of the Optoma might be mostly related to it being Short Throw.

Also are you seriously relying on a fucking fan for fume extraction instead of getting a piece of stainless steel pipe for 10$ and routing the exhaust to the outside

>> No.2810736

Just looked at my order history, paid $250 for a shed that is usually $330. For lumber, hardware, paint, etc, that's pretty close to building it yourself from scratch.

That fan has more than enough CFM to extract for an engine of that size, the advantage of fans vs. Exhaust pipes for generator sheds is they can move alot of the ambient heat out, not just the carbon monoxide. In the future I plan on covering the inside of the shed with sound deadening panels to further reduce noise.

>Why isn't your $400 highly portable equipment sitting outside for anyone to see or steal?

For one thing I like to keep my place tidy, also I'd rather have it clean and well-maintained in a dedicated shed so that the 1-2 times I *absolutely need it* to fire up it doesn't give me any trouble.

I have an asshole neighbor who won't do anything about his dog barking non stop. This is Argentina, there are no laws. I tried talking to him, but he doesn't do anything. I need to kill fire with fire.

We have adjacent walls, brick and mortar. See picture for rough sketch of what I think his house looks like.

My idea was to diy a powerful speaker and screw it into the wall, but I'm kind of a retard knowing how sound works.

Also I'm poor so powerful bluetooth speaker are too expensive. I was thinking buying a driver, an amp, and play music through audio jack with a phone or something. I can solder. Put everything in a wooden plank, and screw it into the wall.

How much amp does the driver need to be to travel through his house? Do I need a wooden box to house everything? I don't care about sound quality whatsoever, I just want to bother him. Or even better, because his dogs sleeps inside, play music every few minutes at night to trigger his dog to bark inside. The more power, the more bass, the better.

I eat once or twice a day, so very little money to spend. As cheap as possible please.

I own a 'cheap' one and it works great.
Downsides are:
It is less efficient, it roams the garden randomly for a few hours, changing to a different direction when it hits something or the boundary wire.
You need to keep the lawn clear, even things like large leaves will blunt the blades quicker since it only has tiny razor blades
It won't go right up to the edge if you have borders, so you will need to strim
The only 'fault' I've ever had was when it got stuck in a loop on its way to recharge, it follows the boundary wire to get back to the charging station but it found the wire going around the bed in the middle of the lawn and went around in a circle until the battery died.

Hello,
At my work we use these 12v gear pumps to do oil changes for large engines (30+ gallons of oil). This whole combination of pump + hoses is something one of my coworkers dreamed up, and it works phenomenally, but I want to improve it.

Currently, in order to turn on the pump, you attach the leads to a starter battery. To reverse the flow, you reverse the leads. I want to build a little control box with an on/off switch and a reversing switch. I understand how to wire this, what I don't know where is where to buy the parts for this project. It needs to be totally sealed against water, oil, and diesel, and tough enough to be dropped and thrown into the back of a truck.

What am I looking for? My budget is around $100-$200 for the components. Thank you

>> No.2810114

Well, the budget isn't that big of issue.

I live in a rather small town and the closest city is also small so there's only one store that can provide me for any specialties like those.

As for the idea, you just need to fuse or solder the wiring and keep them together on some plate or board.

I did a lot of stuff with the company's table saw.

you can buy much smaller 12v batteries, scooter ride on toy and garage door backup batteries if you want to go portable.
you could look into electric yard tool batteries too, like an Ego 54v 5ah battery.
you could also make a portable version that runs off the vehicle battery with jumper cable ends.
otherwise switch to a 120v pump and make it plug in.
Shops that use commercial versions of this just have a tube they stick down in the engine, the whole point is never having to crack the oil pan plug under the vehicle. the whole fixture end thing seems very case specific.
I'd swap the specialty fittings for hose fittings too, but if you make or have that shit on site I guess it's fine.
the output seems unnecessarily reduced as well, there is no reason to cause back pressure just open end the hose into the waste container.

tl;dr that thing seems overproduced and on the fence between portable and sustainable

Why would laptop power adapters or just any universal switching supplies be sensitive to generators?
Switching supplies don't really give a damn about what power actually goes in when it's immediately rectified and put in a tank capacitor. They can very well handle shitty power.

Seems like an old talking point when nothing was universal voltage and a 140v surge on a 120v power supply could very much kill.

Correct.
If you have a press from a factory, they are constantly on. You are doing intermittent pressing so you’ll have a duty cycle (how much off time vs. How much press time).
One battery has something better than 5 minutes on, to 20 minutes off. It’s better than that because of the solar cells charging while in use.
If need be, acquire an additional battery.
You’re possibly going to be full-charging your batteries from your neighbour’s outlet at night anyway.

Anyway, this is typical calculations the guy who needs to play call of destiny on his xbox over cell data while camping makes.

This is quite interesting stuff, Im actually shifting towards solar now. I can get this working solar for 70 e, 180 watts. Could it work out comboed with car batteries? And how strong do car batteries have to be if it's manageable to use them instead of generator?

You think a small business owner would be interested in a strongly built reliable database?
I am very proficient working with Access and can built a good database using SQL and VBA.
Would you hire me to built one custom made just for your business?

that's not a database thing that's a program thing. you could add it to the program you use to print or the print driver. then it's just a matter of a test button and some way to put in offset.

on the high end you could integrate a camera or scanner into the printer and have it report the position of the form. I'd be surprised if they didn't already have this.

my low tech solution would be to just reproduce the damn form on the printer so it's aligned no matter what.

also we used to have to do this shit with typewriters

using a database for a spreadsheet is wasteful you dipshit, you can actually use a spreadsheet for a database. the problem is as the need exceeds spreadsheet as database tier there is a very small window in very specific circumstances where it's not immediately better to go with a robust database solution.

so it's either too simple for Access or you might as well use a better dB. The narrow strip in between is when management is fucking stupid and insists on 1980s technology.

I have no idea what retarded idea you're thinking of. You can design a SCHEMA and we can run in in a real database engine like Postgres. I have no idea where VBA would even come into the equation, but the fact that you mentioned it at all makes me want to stay far away from any code you touch.

I'm no Russian, Scandi and it was kind of aid work in rural areas, paid from my country so not bad. Was before the Ukraine war so there was some attempts of making friends there and make them more up to date. Liked it there except the bureaucracy. This was a while ago guess something can have changed but doubt it. What is your experience with Belarus?

I have a lot of exterior plants, decorative plants (typical mulchbed stuff). I've also got a few small trees, cherry blossom and dogwoods. I want to look into a self watering system for next year, and use that with some pre-emergent weed killer. I have been reading about pic related. But because I have so many exterior plants, including trees, I think I am going to need more than a few. I am wondering if there are any materials with absorbent properties similar to terra cotta that would do the job, but are less fragile. I would prefer to leave them in the ground through the winter. Hardiness zone 6a, for the curious.

Fuck your dripline. I asked about ollas you troglodyte, because I want to use harvested rain water, and that doesn't have the pressure required for a dripline. Also, driplines are for faggots. So is using your phone for things other than money management, gaming and communicating. Thanks for nothing.

>> No.2809954

>>2809950
you know a dripline is holes in a tube, you don't need pressure you just make the holes bigger. you could even use it to fill the ollas if you're really inclined to use dry desert technology in 6a.

The cheapest is buying lines of dripline. Or drip tape. You turn it on at night. For 3 4 hrs

I began to smell some funk in my garage this year so I cut a small hole in my ceiling and found an entire eco system of mold.
So I've ripped out most the drywall, only to find that crackheads built this garage.
>random assortments of lumber
>nails and screws everywhere
>no nail or screw is the same size
>no outer sheeting, just "stud" to siding
>main roof beams are clearly re-used from a different house
It's a wonder that it's standing at all

What would /diy/ do? I'm having the house roof done. I'll be doing the roof of the garage myself. But I planned on selling to move out to middle of nowhere. So this has to be presentable to a potential buyer.
To fix it will cost thousands. Basically a full tear down and rebuild.
Should I just make it into a carport and say fuck the buyers?
I'm at a loss as the best way to address this.

It was inspected. However, this was all hidden behind drywall.
>>2809915
The bare minimum is to tear it down and no longer have a garage.
Other wise it'll have to be rebuilt fully (correctly) or built into a car port.

at least your shit is outside. im buying a house that i was shitty thinking, 'yeah just fix it'. worst decision of my life
>gutted basement because escape window leaks / pours water in
>random water in corner of basement in other room
>hvac cut the fucking floor beams for vents, floors creak everywhere upstairs
>most tiles in kitchen are broke or cracked
>asbestos still in places
>main support wall upstairs has like 4 different shitty headers from old doors and bad remodels
>all windows need replaced
as for the garage outside, its sinking and gets standing water in it now when the rain comes

>> No.2810129

>>2810127
Oh I could go on about the house.
Basically a shit show they tried to cover up. I feel your pain dude. I've basically remodeled the entire house at this point. I'm sick of it. I'm gonna go live in a metal box in a field where no one will bother me. And I have zero home maintenance.
HVAC also cut my floor joists.
