Why would I do all of that stuff which takes 10x longer when a $15 tool makes quick work of it?

Protip- buy the $15 puller to get the thing out. I almost destroyed a bunch of tile and the pipes behind the wall before I went back and got the puller. Those O-rings break up and wedge in there and make it so difficult to remove them sometimes.

It’s going to be something like pic related. This one is mangled and was leaking.

Also you may want to get a little thing of silicone grease for install. It’s a couple bucks for a tiny tub. IIRC, when I bought the OE Moen replacement, it may have come with a tube of silicone included so I didn’t need to buy it that time.

Depending on how much they cost, you might want to replace both sides while you’re in there with the water shut off. If one side is leaky, the other side is probably right behind it. Tell your landlord to deduct it from the rent and be happy he didn’t have to pay a plumber.
