Perfect binding is the easiest. Print off some shit, clamp it together and rub glue on the spine. There a lot of youtube channels for it, just check it out

Basically, you divide your book into little booklets of 3-5 sheets of paper (6-10 pages). Those, you fold in the middle, sew them onto a piece of cloth, trim the pages with a steel press and a sharp knife so the sides are even, then take that piece of cloth and glue it to the cardboard cover. Next, you glue the first and last page to their respective side of the cover as well, and finally, you glue a large piece of paper or cloth onto the cover.

That's actual binding. The more common method would be glue "binding", for which you just print all the pages, press them down, slather the backside with glue and press a piece of thick paper against it to make the cover.

Is it just scale of printing hundreds of books that people choose to spend thousands or tens of thousands to get a company to print and bind their books?
Surely there are some inexpensive automated binding machines that could make a small print worth it.

For perfect binding you could do it pretty quick with nothing but a clamp and a hammer and scissors.

If you want to actually stitch h journals together and shit, you're already into it as a hobby, not to be making books. You're looking at a drill or saw or dremel now and some curved needles. You need to upgrade your clamp so it can hold thongs while you stitch.

if you wanna be based you use solid wood panels for the covers and cover it in leather, or you can cheap out and be a pussy using something like fiberboard and fabric
when you print off the pages the sequence can be confusing
for starters, you fold a sheet in half, this is called a folio, or you can do some of the more complex examples in the image
a single folio has 4 pages for print
take 4 or more folio and sandwich them together like in the picture and you have a gathering, which is like a small booklet
in the example here you can see the sequence of pages, where folio 1 contains the first and last pages of the gathering
continuing in next post

now, once you have all the pages printed off into your set of gatherings with 4 folio each, you sew the gatherings together, and ideally you use a strip of thick material like leather that you sew around, this becomes the "ribs" on the spines of older books you see
theres multiple techniques for sewing the gatherings together so just look it up, the method i used to use was niche and doesnt work well in most circumstances

taking the sewn-together quire, you now chisel or drill out holes in the cover material
if you use leather like you should, you glue and wedge it into the hole, in this case i used cloth and had to glue it to the cover itself
this image is also a great example of why you shouldnt use cheap materials like fiberboard for the book cover if possible, because when i made the holes part of the board broke and i had to improvise

over the cover i used leather weld to glue thin sheep skin to it (which you should dye before putting it on)
also i just remembered that i did use wedges on this book, but didnt on the other side for some reason, you can see the slight outline of it
the techniques for working the leather can be found in some other guide, leather is suprisingly easy to work with

Mostly scale, but also starting costs. Binding press and sewing machine or glue aren't that expensive, but to cut the edges cleanly, you need a scissor-ground knife that's extremely sharp. Those are pretty expensive. You can make a wide wood chisel work, but those aren't exactly cheap either. Most people don't want to spend 150-300 bucks (for all the tools) just to try something that might not work.

Not for actual binding. Cheap machines usually use ring or nail "binding" where you just have to put your sheets of papers into the machine and pull a lever once or twice. Those "bindings" look like shit, though.

As nice as your work looks, aren't you a bit too snobbish about this? If you have half a brain, all the "research" you need is five minutes on youtube or even just looking at an old book that's starting to fall apart. The latter is how I started binding books.
For simple books, the only parts that require some knowhow are cutting the sheets (which you can do freehand and with a regular paper knife, it just won't be as pretty as with a press and a scissorground knife) and picking the right thickness of yarn.

Of course, if you want to use tooled leather, engraved brass lamps etc. it gets more complicated, but I doubt that's waht OP is after.
