i hot soak 30's down to 29 but you can find down to 27's by getting dead stock vintage ones on ebay. they typically don't command more than like 20 dollars and even the selvedge ones can be had around 30.

how you want to do it is run it 1-2x through the washing machine on hot setting low/no spin. add a towel or two to the wash and flip them inside out so they don't marble or crease.
if you really want to be autistic and retain max indigo do a hot bathtub soak but you need to do it like fill tub with scalding water -> soak 5 mins -> drain, repeat a bunch of times so it spends 30-60 mins in hot water. soaking normally
then tumble dry them inside out max heat. <- key step and won't ruin them
they measure 29 afterwards and my waist stretches them back to like 29.5 (i'm about a 27"-28" waist depending on the day)

also key to know: the waist band does not stretch back as much if you make sure to always wear a belt with them.

the side adjusters you find on some fatigue pants are great as well. you can't take as much size off the waist with them, but its so nice to not need multiple pairs of pants for weight fluctuations if you work out.
i wish modernized style denim wasn't so cucked by trying to be like levi's and more brands would be actually creative with things like that. i don't think it would look out of place on modern jeans and could even be hidden on the inside of the jeans like with dress pants.
