My classical poem dedicated to Grand Seiko:

In the realm of time, a legend unfolds,
Grand Seiko, master of craftsmanship untold.
With precision and grace, its hands do dance,
In symphony with moments, its beauty enhance.

From the workshops of Japan, a legacy grand,
Where skilled hands create, with precision in hand.
Each watch a masterpiece, a work of art divine,
A symbol of luxury, where craftsmanship does shine.

In stainless steel or gold, its design pristine,
A symbol of elegance, in every scene.
With movements so precise, each second a delight,
Grand Seiko, a watch that commands the light.

And as time marches on, Grand Seiko stands tall,
A beacon of excellence, for one and for all.
In the world of watches, it reigns supreme,
A timeless beauty, a horological dream.

Am I the only one who's not impressed by top tier luxury watches anymore? I feel like modern watchmaking relies way too much on CAD and it just shows in the final products. I usually hate that word, but pic related is "soulless" to me. Same with most ALS, JLC, PP, Rolex, Omega, whatever. I can almost see the Autodesk UI just by looking at these watches.

I'm very pleased with mine. It's beautiful, keeps good time, has a display back, everything about it is finished to perfection in my opinion. I went with the white dial black bezel, it's a very tasteful combination the contrast is nice and makes it very legible. Lume is great too, ways to distinguish hands and indices when having a piss in the night. Bracelet is very good quality and finished nicely, very high quality clasp.

>>18106471

>>18106473
The silver is beautiful, has a very rugged unique look, more masculine than the other colours I find. The green one is really nice too. The Sea Master was originally designed as the Weekend kick around watch. Omega originally had a fully dedicated dive watch named the Marina made in 1932. So the Sea Master just needed some water resistance.

Panerai has historically had some serious dive missions (see Perezcope's in depth articles!). But I believe Omega objectively has had more dives. They were standard issues for the British diving outfits before Rolex came along and just gave their watches away. The split of going from Rolex/Omega to CWC is also unique too.

The movement isn't a ticking time bomb; it's just a modular movement. If you send it to Omega to service, they'll charge you what they normally charge for chronographs and you'll get back one in like-new condition. Whether or not they service the chronograph module or swap it out for a new one is irrelevant, though this might be a concern if you service it with an independent watchmaker (it varies, essentially, depending on the watchmaker). The chronograph module for this model is well respected, and the watches are generally well regarded for their expected performance. I'd start from the assumption that the watch needs a service when you get it, so factor that into the cost of ownership. 30m WR is fine, but only if the watch has been pressure tested recently (i.e. within 1 year of usage). If you dive regularly, you'd get your watch pressure tested every year, and if it needs new gaskets, it needs new gaskets. 30m is more than enough for daily use as well as swimming; the rule is 'do not operate the chronograph pushers or the crown while the watch is submerged.' If you stick to that rule, then the watch is fine; I've taken my Speedy pro swimming and it's fine. Splashing won't fuck it up.

>>18107049
It happens; don't worry, you'll find a watch that sings to you louder every day instead of retreating away from you. Be thankful you live in an era of 'infinite' possibilities. When I was young, we were limited by what the local jeweler had or could source. Now you can get anything from any country....

>>18107118
Why not save for Rolex? The prices on the grey market continue to drop gradually, and eventually you will be able to just get one at an authorized AD. You've got nothing to lose. You have to go with your heart, but never spend money on a cope for anything. You'll always be unhappy, and probably end up spending more money later on on what you really wanted in the first place.

Maybe a cultural background issue; I think Anon meant this: In the heyday of the shopping mall, one could get inexpensive watches (i.e. 20-200$) which had quartz movements but most importantly copied aesthetic elements from higher-end expensive watches. Invicta, Fossil, and other brands were well-known 'mall watches'. The finishing was not good, the movements were pedestrian and varying in quality and reliability, and essentially the function of the watch was solely to tell time without looking offensive to the untrained eye. Does that help?

The polishing is too good, the lines are too good, it doesn't have a tacky cheap looking sunburst dial, it doesn't have a big ugly bezel that doesn't move, it has unusual but functional complications that aren't distracting.

The mall watch equivalent of this would be quartz, all brushed surfaces, ugly sunburst dial wilth blemishes in it, a 24 hour subdial that can't be set independently, a big fixed bezel with big knobby minute markers, and they'd put it on a hollow endlink bracelet with a pressed clasp sized with pins and collars.

The Bel Canto
1 - isn't a minute repeater properly speaking, it's an hour chime. There is a difference but it doesn't matter much
2 - isn't an in-house movement, it's a stock movement and CW designed the complication module to go on top of it. Which is a very smart way of going around it : you get some unique setups and complications for a fraction of the price because the hardest parts to do in-house are not for you to worry about.

I think industry and marketing consensus is that modifying and building onto third party movements can be referred to as in house. "in house" doesn't really have a set in stone legal definition and depending on the brand can mean all kinds of things from manufacturing and assembling each component to altering components of movements to having another company under the same corporate umbrella make a movement for you.

>> No.18107317

>>18107312
It can and that's sort of its own problem because many use it as a way to claim they have in-house movements because they decorate and regulate some ETAs. The claim of CW is a lot more legitimate then since they realy do build their own added module.
It's all a mess and the lack of available info can be annoying if you want to figure out who does what and to what extent.

Even the Bel Canto's module isn't entire in-house. When I was interested in getting one, I did some research and found out who they bought the module from, though CW did modify it to a degree.

In-house wanking is still extremely tiresome though. It diminishes the watchmaker's art (taking a JLC movement and finishing it to HH standards means nothing?) and it gets people trying to create logical pricing structures around luxury goods that have never followed logical pricing structures. (OK, that IWC uses the same movement but the Vacheron adds 4g of gold to the case so it should cost no more than X.)

>> No.18107365

>>18107340
Luxury pricing is "logical" but the money goes into things that you can't necessarily see that you need to sort of refine your palate for in order to appreciate it, mostly because a lot of what you're paying for is the hourly wages of a craftsman putting hand work into each individual piece. The difference between a Patek and a timex is with the patek skilled workers spent hours meticulously finishing every individual screw on the watch and regulated the movement in 5 positions before casing it and then regulated it again after it was cased. Does that make a difference? For a lot of people, no. But discerning people who appreciate that are willing to pay for it.

With pretty much everything you buy there are diminishing returns on what you're paying for. A $50 bottle of wine will probably be a lot better than a $15 bottle of wine, but a $100 bottle of wine might only be a little better than the $50 bottle. You may have to be an experienced taster to understand the difference, but the time and work that went into producing that difference could be huge. Whether it's worth the price is up to you.

>> No.18107372

>>18107365
No one is denying that a Patek gets more labor-hours than a Timex and, thus, will cost more. I think you may be forgetting to add in additional "luxury pricing" simply to make the customer think he's getting a more prestigious product.

Take your basic hand-winding dress watch. Patek's version (6119R, for example) will be considerably more expensive, about 10k USD, than ALS's (201.033) even though they will be roughly on-par with one another in all respects.

Patek is Patek and can charge more. ALS is the new boy and has not yet developed the same level of prestige in the market.

except one is a few grand and the other is a few hundred. gotta take into consideration of orignal MSRP too. a $300 seiko in 1970 was the same price as a rolex GMT.

That anon is not wrong. The higher-end Seikos of the late 60s/early 70s have external fit and finish to old Rolexes from the same era. (Obviously, movement quality was a different matter)

However, it's not really a relevant thing to point out since >>18107245 was probably talking about modern, new watches. In that case, there is very little difference between a $300 and $1000 watch since it's all machine-finished, simple shapes.

I took an Omega pocket watch from 1920 for a revision since it had issues running (it only ran if you kept it at certain angles) and they told me that the watch is in very bad conditions and that more than a revision it would be a restoration and that it will cost me around €600/700, and they told me to only do it if the watch has sentimental value. I accepted anyway but they also told me that they're not even sure if they can do it and they have taken my watch while they check if it's actually fixable.
I want to know if they asked me too much, i had no idea it was in such a bad shape, the last revision was anywhere around 10-20 years ago (but they told me that the last guy who serviced the watch did a bad job)
This is a very reputable family owned watchmaking shop, been in business since 1900 and only has good reviews mostly stating that the owners are honest. So, is the price asked reasonable? I should have asked for more opinions but I really trusted the guy at the shop
