And this is the Final Product, the ultimate goal of all that background work.

When I was working on the strip,I had lots of decisions to make about what five varients of the character in the upper left hand corner would be. They were important story elements that were introduced here,so it required a lot of homework to produce. I will post a few developmental sketches.

This strip required me to design 5 different variations of the one in the upper left corner.

Well, I have to design characters occasionally when they pop up in my story, and this picture shows the results of 20+ pages of designs. I needed 5 distinctively different versions of the character in the upper left, and at the last moment I decided the center one was caretaker of my sim sized club in Second Life, deleted years ago,but a better memory. The first panel needed both the character and the gargoyle thing designed, and had to figure out their relative sizes so each had enough definition in the 2 inch stripe each character inhabited. I went nuts trying to make a cool enough Magic Conjuring Whatzit for the Dark one, until I scrapped it and just made an eye thing. I did a character portrait for Cardita after Googling seashell kinds and looking for some sound alike name beginning with a C.

Maybe I will post some of these developmental sketches.

Actually, about 75% of what you draw should be for You. These are the roughs, doodles, experiments and design sketching you will do for the homework required for making your work meant for the public viewing. Pic related took a lot of design work to produce. Five radically different versions of another character. That stuff might be interesting to an art paleontologist or fan interested in the creative process, but not your average Joe

Be prepared and willing to redraw and redesign your characters until you are comfortable with them. I did very many designs for this strip, from what the characters themselves looked like, then what they were doing in their panel, and what props were they interacting with. And all of these ideas had to mesh with the story and world as well. If I ever finish this particular story, I think Jeremey will meet Timothy.

Relax, sailor. I'm a Protege Cranky Old Man age 57,nightworker shelf stocker, mad dreamer, pot smoking pontificator. I have just come home from work, smoked a wee bowl of super legal weed, and feel the need to Share. Lucky you. So here I am, spewing advice,or at the moment, amusing myself by just generally spewing.

This is my latest strip, and features alternate universe versions of the main character in the upper left corner. A lot of design work went into it.
