Am I really supposed to adhere to the fundamentals or not?

"Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist"
-Pablo Picasso

Not my favorite artist, but that's a really good quote.
Learn the fundamentals so you can have freedom in your drawings while making them look good.

Only responses worth reading

The only singular unbreakable, true RULE is:

Good drawings have form

That's it. You just need to achieve form, in whatever way you can. You can use proper rendering, you can use lines to show form, you can use perspective to show form. Whatever you do, the goal is to have form. There is no rebuttal to this. No response, go draw and work on your form.

This. There's a difference between breaking a rule and simply not following it. Even when a skilled artist suggests that a rule should be broken, they insist that you learn the rules first, don't ignore them.
