What is the consensus on Vilppu here?

Is he the sort of teacher you should prioritize as "God-tier"? (as many people seem to depict him as) Or is he more of a secondary resource to you?

he was good when starting out, but ive moved on to loomis and bridgman. you could probably skip him and just do krenz style copies for the first 3 months.

I dont like vil-poo for 3 reasons
1. Most of his video content is just classroom recordings with poor audio, broken up by students coughing occasionally.
2. These recordings are often 90+ minutes(get to the point boomer)
3. he is not beginner friendly. I think this is the biggest reason why some treat him like the best teacher ever while others see him as meh. The things he says, like "feel the form", confuse begs, but is good for ints+. This is true with his books too.

feeling the form takes like 3 months max. his nma videos are also shorter and are recorded with pro equipment.

I don't ever see work around here that really reflects his teachings on form. just feel it guys! do you feel it, or just like to say the catch phrase?

He may not be even good for ints. His job for 50 years was to teach art center students and disney professionals, all of whom were already near professional level already.

What's crazy is that his entire teaching revolves around drawing basic forms. Imagine teaching a professional animator how to draw a box lol. boggles the mind

>He was good when starting out, but ive moved on to loomis and bridgman.
It's the other way around for most artists, you start with Loomis then when you become a pro artist you start learning from Vilppu.
That's what Disney artists did for decades, they read Loomis books then took classes with Vilppu

The Disney guys were literally professionals not near pros.

Q:
What did the art teacher say when he accidentally drank a bottle of laxatives?

Villpu

The problem is /beg/s see posts about him being a good figure drawing teacher so they go to his content, but figure drawing is inherently a high level course and he teaches it as such, assuming you know the fundamentals

He's really good, but was too advanced for me as a beginner
His video courses were godlike and clarified a lot of things after I was a bit past beginner (after doing Steve Huston's beginner course, which was really good)

His approach completely changed the way I approach figure drawing, people shit on him for relying on "just draw a circle" but so much of art is straight up just putting a circle in the right place. I don't particularly like his drawings all that much but his approach forces you to think and make decisions that align with what you're drawing, not with what your eyes see.
His teaching by itself won't make you draw great figures, but if you get good enough, you'll start to notice that you rely on what he was teaching more that you'd think.

Saying that breasts are useless for gesture is an insane take tho

Kind of off-topic, but which teacher do you recommend for a high beg/low int? I'd like to improve my anatomy skills and ability to draw weird angles from imagination.

you could take a thousand life drawing classes and you'll still never be able to create a good body from imagination, you need to know 3d form construction + anatomy and perspective mastery for that plus a great visual library

anyone know where i can get his nma courses for free?

The value of vilppu is his attitude. As an instructor he's an anachronism. We don't need him specifically, there are dozens of free videos with the info you need.

What's good to learn is his personal attitude. It's one of humility, respect, optimism, cheer. Ignore his teachings, forget that "feel the form" bullshit. If you get it you get it, but worrying about it is a trap.

Instead watch his interview on proko
https://youtu.be/rbN8wbRz9i8?si=JUBH9ctxd8BiTrpl

Aspire to be like him as a person. Forget art. If you never draw again, just try to be as well adjusted, happy, and genuinely grateful for your life as him.
