Is there an essay or a video on youtube that discusses the preparatory stuff of a drawing?

Like what's the purpose of a sketch, preparatory sketches, studies you need to do, etc.

It's more of a per-project thing. Sometimes you have a clear idea in your mind, sometimes some aspects are unclear and need to be rehearsed or studied.

If you don't need to prepare at all, there's no need for preparatory sketches. But if you're unsure about, say, color, then you want to do a few color studies to test a few different ideas.

Then the details are individual courses (say, a course specifically on color).

Not sure there's more to preparatory sketches than that.

There is no set process, you have to make one for yourself. If you want an example, you can check out Even Amundsen's video on how he prepares for an illustration. There's a lot of prep work - he does planning just with words, then studies, then thumbnails, etc
It's free and no credit required but you have to register an account
