Are there modern neoplatonists the way there are reputable neoaristotelians? Does anyone take Proclus or Iamblichus seriously in their own right? I mean, there are serious Buddhists including in philosophy departments, and Buddhist philosophy doesn't seem any less premodern/religious than neoplatonism. They have the same mixture of academics and mysticism, so where are the neoplatonists?

Yeah, and not some weird cult/new age shit. Something like Bhikku Bodhi but you know sort of like a wizard or something, like Porphyry.

So new age cultist, but appealing to incels.

Yeah kinda, if you want to put it like that. There were all these badass wizard neoplatonists walking around, but now they seem to have only antiquarian interest. Meanwhile Buddhism is really trendy. Why?

I only see neo-platonism discussed frequently and seriously here. Rationalist thought has better and even current and more modern thinkers. College reading lists probably still have Plato across the board. You are essentially asking why people won't go for the cheap knock off when the original still runs better.

Buddhists have been allowing anyone and everyone to question their teachings for thousands of years.
Plato used the literary equivalent of sock puppets.

Plato is literally the literary equivalent of this meme. “I drew you as a moron engaging in circular reasoning so your complete ideas are refuted.”

Lloyd Gerson seems very partial to Neoplatonism, but I'm never under any impression that he's going to practice theurgy or anything. John Dillon otoh seems like he eats that shit up.

You're being funny but a lot of Plato is simply working backwards from a conclusion established on magic numbers.
Diogenes would have loved smuggies, he basically authored them on the spot.
