I see this lil nigga in everyone now (including myself). People are so comically haughty and self important.

this is one of the worst books I've tried reading. It's juvenile and mildly amusing at best. No wonder the writer khs.

This is exactly something Ignatius would write

Book was OK but by God the sections that were just the Jewish husband and wife bickering were unbearable. If he meant to make those painful on purpose then well done, I suppose.

I figured that may have been the intention, because the scenes with Ignatius or the Night of Joy were humorous, but the only possible humor I got out of the Levys was maaaaybe laughing at how dysfunctional they are. But it doesn't really rise to that goal before the levels of oy veys and kvetching cannot be endured.

Well yeah you're supposed to hate the wife. She's awful. You're also supposed to celebrate her eventual downfall and comeuppance. There's tension the entire book because it could really go either way with everyone: Ignatius could go to jail/get sued, Mancuso could get fired, Jones could get jailed again etc. etc. If Levy could just tell her to fuck off and dump her he would have but also it wouldn't build any tension and there'd be nothing left to write about. They being Jewish is basically inconsequential beyond being probably historically accurate with rich Jews owning a garment factory. But I don't think they'd be any different had they been old WASP's.

The chapter where he is working the hot dog cart is my favourite. Seeing him slowly eat his stock of ‘dogs without doing a lick of work, magnificent.

Also he’s just like me for real

The husband is the only Jew in the family anyway. The wife and the daughters celebrate Christmas. Though I agree those are the hardest parts to get through

They are but I wouldn't call them "unbearable". For me, the parts with Santa and his mother were equally unbearable but again, (I think) we're supposed to hate/root against Santa. She's a dumb old cunt. Wish she got knifed or killed by a bowling ball or something. But alas, that would be unrealistic and crude. People like that exist. Toole is great because, like OP's original point, we can see these characters in our own lives everyday. We can't kill them and they don't actually deserve that. Ignatius is mostly reviled by those around him but we, the reader, like him because he's hilarious and the protagonist and actually right about everything but yeah as an actual hypothetical person, most people would probably get tired of his shit. I can also see a scenario where people like or understand Santa or his mother. I understand them. I guess Mrs. Levy stands out in that I can't imagine anyone liking that person in the book or in real life but lord knows there're people like her out there.
