Brainstorming session: what might this version of the game have looked like?
>Everything up to Thamasa is the same with minimal changes. Things that seem to set up WoR, such as Duane and Katarin's story, probably wouldn't be included or would be modified (either disclude it or have Katarin already be pregnant). Umaro and Gogo can join earlier. Can spot "WoR" landmarks but the game doesn't give full access until later or they're optional ("Cult of Kefka" tower can be, I dunno, Gestahl's).
>Kefka's plot at Thamasa turns out a little differently - while he's out for the Espers, the Thamasans attempt to fight back as well, throwing him off guard and allowing some Espers to escape. Nonetheless, Thamasans are outmatched by Magitek Armor. Kefka realizes the Thamasans can be a game-changer and goes off to report them to Gestahl. Leo tries to stop him, which saves the Thamasans for now at the cost of his own life. Now that big solitary memorial makes more sense. The rest plays out as normal except Gungho informs Strago that the town will be getting ready to implement their contingency if their secret was discovered by the outside world. Terra overhears this but says nothing.
>An extra scenario is added before the Floating Continent. Maybe we catch up to the Imperials that accompanied Kefka, and when they're defeated they reveal Kefka went missing. Cue Floating Continent.
>It plays the same, except instead of destroying the world, Kefka uses the Light of Judgment on Vector and crashes the Floating Island into the town of Thamasa, presumably so Kefka can ensure there are no more magic-users to rival him.
>Celes wakes up at Cid's not a year later, but a day or so. He gets her up to speed and tells her that Kefka Tower appeared in Vector's place overnight. Cid thinks that Kefka is most likely after his research - a counter in case Kefka and Celes went rogue. Play "desolate" WoR overworld theme here, things are dire.

If you thought she ended up with anyone romantically, you miised the point of her character arc. She ultimately found her own meaning of "love" a different way. If it was going to be anyone, it was going to be Leo, but that was more of a big-brother/father-figure relationship from what we see.

Edgar totally ended up with Relm though, and I fervently defend it as being foreshadowed very early in the game with that precocious little girl in the castle.
