FF5 is basically the previous two games put together. That's not really a secret. It continues with the extensive narrative and ATB of 4 but brings back the job system and the crystals trope of 3. Part of the reason it feels like the black sheep of the SNES games is that it was explicitly a "back to the roots" approach while 4 and 6 were both progressing the series further to what it would later become.

Every FF game has parallels with the first game.

It's FF3: the sequel which is good. 3, 5 and 6 are my favorite games in the series by far.

i have never played FF3. FF5 is my favorite game in the series so far. is there a clear best version? is it the ds remake or one of the ports?

>> No.10909315

No shit? Did you not get to the part about the Warriors of Dawn yet?

People shit on the ds remake for some reason but I really like it. Personally 3 is one ofy favorites along with 5. It does give you a lot less freedom in terms of class building, but it's still a fun game.

>> No.10909617

Sad that so many people play 5 before 3 and end up shitting on the latter.
5 improved 3's battle system but that doesn't mean that 3 deserves to be in the bottom of every ff tier list I saw. It's still a good game.

Also being Japan only in the snes Era is a big enormous reason why it's considered the "black sheep".

I just beat the DS version about 10 minutes ago and gotta say I think it was great.

If you played V already, you're probably gonna be heavily disappointed with III's job system.
It's still a good game and people overexaggerate Crystal Tower's difficulty.

Any of the three main versions (FC, PR and DS) is pretty great, so it basically boils down to personal preference. If you try the FC version and you don't like it that much you can try that one romhack that adds QoL.

Isn’t the PSP version by default better than NDS since you don’t require wireless/wifi to complete the Onion Knight sidequest?

All FF3 needs is a romhack to make the job system behave like it does in 5, then everyone would love it. I just don't know if there is enough SRAM to go around to cover all the information the game would have to save about every job on every character. FF3 has 8KB of SRAM to play with, and I don't know how much of that is taken up by stats, equipment, and all the flags to keep track of what the player has done and which chests have been opened.
