I just beat this game (mostly) blind and it only took me a few hours. While it has some tough spots, you can just fly over most of them. The final boss took a couple of tries and even still, it only took maybe 30 minutes of attempts.
Overall it was good but definitely not that hard.

Some paths are harder than others. I finished the game in a few hours as well in the early 90s when I got it for Christmas but there are other stage paths which are much harder. Especially if you don't take Alucard to just bat form past them.
