I love this game so much, I played it for hours upon hours. I would get school assigments to read books and in the middle of the book I would start daydreaming about the game, about the things I had read in the manual and completely forget about the book and would need to re-read 10-20 pages again. I would get home from school and just turn on my PC and start playing until night and then do all my homework in a rush.
Speaking of the manual, it sparked my imagination so much, thanks to the amazing art and all the lore and the way the units and buildings were depicted.
Having the CD version and seeing the opening scene animated over just being still images was mind blowing.
Playing it over dial-up was an insanely cool experience too, even though I had like 1 other friend I could play with, I wish I had more people to try more battles.

It's not great, but it was a product of it's time when there wasn't much like it.
I would play with a friend over modem. Eventually we also played a bit of C&C but didn't last too long.

It was a modest success, then Warcraft2 came out the next year, was a major improvement over the original, and really put Blizzard on the map. The first game was kind of forgotten and never really had a huge following like WC2 and Diablo to begin with. It's nothing special imo. My go to RTS in '95 was Command and Conquer.

I'd honestly rather play WC1 than 2. It has a cool gritty vibe with grungy visuals and music and the dungeon maps that aren't in 2.

I was the same age as gen A is now when this l came out and yeah, it was extremely fun to play. This and command and conquer were a revelation back then, can’t properly express how amazing those were when they came out, they were a completely new style of game. Of course it’s going to seem like an outdated relic now, it is. This is a bait thread probably created by an old fag anyway so here (You) go.

At a glance - everything in this image is instantly understandable. Things are very distinct Nothing really blends into shit - what's present is clear and concise.

Now - you get starcraft and there's like 7 grey fucking block triangles buildings that basically look like the same thing with different dick tower arrangements on them with various largely indistinct units running around at all times that look equally bland.
Starcraft is visually a fucking mess. Whether the balance is good or not isn't really a case I'm making - I don't care about the game because graphics ARE important in an RTS where being able to recognize shit is vital and they did a piss poor job on that end. Are the graphical specs terrible for the game - no. It's purely design choices that effect game-play negatively.

the fucking christ does this even mean? no one who has not played the game is going to be able to tell you what the distinct function of that building is just by looking at it.

well if your game stores were run by scum and no one threatens to sue them. that's what you get. here, shareware games were clearly stated on the small disk box or the plastic packaging. they were all much cheaper than full priced games but i never see anyone buying them except me and my bro.

there was also that 1 DOOM shareware disk that someone cost 5 AUS bucks more that other shareware, so i guess lots of people bought that one, or the seller just thought it would be popular because cutting edge 3D!!!

The following was never really huge, but it was passionate. This game was gd awesome to play and a gift for those of us stuck on Macs in the 90s. Agree with >>10941568 too, the dungeon maps are great and we didn’t get that back until WC3.
>>10941730
Agree StarCraft buildings etc can sometimes seem jumbled and too alike, but your image in >>10941726 doesn’t seem much better, those orc huts all start to look indistinct if you get enough of them lumped together.
>>10942567
There’s a difference between boring/braindead and formulaic. I’d argue WC1 and 2 are formulaic but not braindead. They can get boring if you’re just running similar missions for marathon sessions, but keep in mind all these games were made during an era where kids still went outside and took breaks from gaming.
